Men and Yeast Infections

Put simply, yes, it is possible for men to get yeast infections. Yeast infections are caused by particular microscopic yeast or fungi known as Candida. There exist over twenty species of Candida, the most prominent being Candida albicans.

Candida is commonly found on the skin, particularly in areas that are moist and warm. Candida is responsible for several infections including skin and diaper rashes, thrush (oral yeast infection), nail bed infections, and vaginal yeast infections.

How Common are Male Yeast Infections?

Approximately 80% of all reported yeast infections are female. However, this number is only an approximate value, as it does not include cases that were self-treated with over the counter methods.

Approximately 12-15% of men that have sexual interactions with a partner currently suffering from a yeast infection will contract the infection themselves. It is estimated that 75% of all women will suffer from at least one yeast infection in their lifetime.

Of this 75% of women that develop a yeast infection, approximately 40% will have a recurrence. Billions of dollars are spent yearly on yeast infection treatments, available by prescription and over-the-counter.

Yeast Infection Causes

There are many factors that contribute to the overgrowth of Candida yeast including;

• Oral contraceptive use
• repeated sexual intercourse over short periods of time
• perfumed feminine hygiene sprays
• steroid use
• tight clothing (poorly ventilated)
• topical antibiotic use
• stress
• weakened/suppressed or compromised immune system
• high carbohydrate intakes (sugars)
• diabetes
• pregnancy

In some cases, yeast infections are considered to be a sexually transmitted disease, present in both men and women.

Female: Vaginal Yeast Infection Symptoms

Yeast infections are typically associated with a variety of symptoms, most commonly burning, itching, or vaginal irritation. Vaginal discharge is also commonly associated with the presence of yeast infections. It is typically a thick gray-whitish discharge that is commonly described as similar to “cottage cheese”, although it is possible for this discharge to vary.

Male: Penile Yeast Infection Symptoms

Male yeast infections are commonly known as penile yeast infections. Common symptoms of yeast infection in men include burning sensations after intercourse, temporary rashes, discharge from the penis, and the general soreness and irritation near the head of the penis. There exists an actual list of symptoms associated with yeast infections in men. However, some men may not experience symptoms.

Male Yeast Infection Treatments

There are many treatments available for yeast infections. There are antifungal creams, oral medications, and all natural supplements available for the treatment of yeast infections.

Recurring yeast infections may require a visit to the physician. Also, individuals with a weakened or compromised immune system may not respond to over-the-counter treatments, and should seek the advice of a physician. Typically, the sooner the treatment begins is associated with more effective and quicker results.
