Losing weight can be hard; maintaining weight loss can be even harder. But it is possible. Every day millions of Americans diet and make a commitment to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. Certainly weight loss requires dedication and focus – you need to keep your end goal in mind throughout the duration of the diet.
However, consider the person you will be after having met your weight loss goal. Not only have you shed pounds, but you’se most likely increased your energy level, found a new level of self confidence, are eating a balanced diet, and have the strength of mind and fortitude to set a goal and achieve it.
Remember that weight loss ultimately is an attitude. It’s a new way of looking at your life and yourself. Here are three of the most important tips to help you achieve your weight loss goal.
Be Realistic
When setting your goal, choose one that’s realistic. You may not ever fit into the dress you wore to senior prom, but why would you ever need to? Your body may not ever be a size four but may be a great looking size eight or ten. It’s important to create a goal that you can achieve and that is healthy for you. Whether it’s measured by pant size, pounds dropped, inches lost or miles run, your goal is your motivator; it should not discourage you.
As you start to drop pounds and become more physically fit, you’ll need to adapt your goal to meet your needs. You may find as you lose weight you’ll require fewer calories and need to exercise longer or harder than before. First recognize your achievement: you’se lost a pant size and can now run a mile! Congratulate yourself, and set a new goal.
Be Smart
Everything you do in a day has options; make smart choices. Pack in the physical activity wherever you can. When you’re at work, take the stairs. Use the restroom on another floor just to walk more. Spend your lunch break on a walk if possible. At the grocery store, park near the edge of the parking lot. You’ll save all that time and gas wasted as you driving around looking for the best spot. Choose the low fat or fat-free options as much as possible. You won’t miss the extra calories.
Be Happy
Remember why you’se decided to lose weight. This is not a punishment, but a decision to improve your life and yourself. You want this! Celebrate the little goals. When you can finally fit into the pants you wore a year ago, congratulate yourself. While we so often celebrate by going out to eat and making a big dinner, celebrate instead with a different activity. Maybe you’se always wanted to salsa dance, but felt too awkward. Congratulate yourself by taking a dance class or going out to a club.
Tell the people around you so they can celebrate with you. Your family, friends and co-workers will be happy for you, and provide encouragement and support. Who knows, someone you know may be inspired and turn into a workout buddy. Life is better when we have people to share it with. Take the first step and share your life with others.
