Menopause Myths: Having A Low Libido (Sex Drive) Is A Normal Part Of Aging

One of the biggest myths linked to aging is that sex drive decreases with age. However, because there are so many factors linked to a person’s sex drive, especially when that person is a woman, it’s hard to say that age is a direct cause of low libido.

Low Sex Drive

A low sex drive might be classified as a lack of interest in sex, lack of sexual desire and lack of arousal to sexual stimulation. However, a lack of desire is really only a problem if it bothers you or your partner. Some couples may find they enjoy being physically close, cuddling and simply talking and reconnecting. For some, this is as important as having sex.

Possible Causes Of Low Libido

There are so many factors that can affect a woman’s libido. First, consider your daily life and routine. Are you constantly on-the-go and stressed? Stress and anxiety can make it very difficult to even think about relaxing and being sexual.

If you’re aging, you may notice changes in your body. Some women feel uncomfortable and unattractive as they’re still getting used to their changing bodies and this makes it difficult to relax and enjoy their partner. If things are tense between your partner and yourself, it’s only natural to have difficulty engaging in sex.

Talk To Your Doctor

Be sure to consult your doctor if your low libido is a problem. If you are on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) pills, you may find a patch more effective. If you are going through menopause, vaginal dryness may make sexual intercourse painful. You doctor can recommend an estrogen cream to increase lubrication. If your doctor feels the problem may be emotional, you might want to consider seeing a therapist.

Talk To Your Partner

Be sure you and your partner are able to openly and honestly communicate. If you are experiencing some emotional problems that may be affecting your sex drive, tell your partner. They may be experiencing your lack of desire as a rejection of them. You both may get comfort from simply spending some quality time together, talking or cuddling.

The emotional and physical connection of lying together will comfort you both. Be sure to take the pressure off the actual sex; focus on how you feel and how you feel with your partner. Eventually, when you rebuild that emotional connection and are comfortable, feelings of intimacy will return.
