10 Steps To Stay Focused At Work: Step 4 – Drink Water and Snack Throughout the Day

Studies have shown over and over that maintaining regular levels of blood sugar by eating frequent, smaller meals helps to sustain energy levels. And we all know that water is the best liquid for our bodies.

Snacks Galore

Millions of Americans admit to munching frequently at work. It could be the regular box of doughnuts on the break room counter, the stash of chips you keep in your bottom drawer, or the chocolates you co-worker offers you every day. Often we eat because of boredom; we eat to have something to do. A few simple changes to your eating routine can turn your snacks from bad to good.

Pack Snacks

Bringing snacks from home is a great way to regulate your workplace munching. A bag of veggies and low fat dip is a great way to satisfy that snack tooth, and boost your energy. Some whole grain crackers and a bit of cheese will give you the long lasting protein and carbohydrate kick to get you through the long morning. An apple or fruit salad will give you the sugar and energy to push you through the afternoon. If you don’t have chips around to munch on, you’ll pick your fruits and veggies instead.

If it’s your day to bring in an office treat, grab a tray of fruits and veggies. Believe it or not, most people will dip into the healthy foods if they’re available, in the same way you dip into the doughnut box just because it’s there.

Water Versus… Everything Else

Try and keep a glass or bottle of water at your desk. For every cup of coffee you drink, have a glass of water. This way you can regulate your fluid intake and stay hydrated. If you’re a soda drinker, do the same thing. By alternating one glass of water with one other beverage, you still indulge the craving, but allow the extra water to fill you up. Besides, the excess sugars in soda and the caffeine from coffee can produce energy lows not long after they give you their buzz.

Eating from Boredom

If you keep a bag of chips around to much on out of habit or boredom, there’s another great reason to substitute your snacks with fruits and veggies. Fresh produce has that sharp crisp that our mouths love in chips and, when paired with low fat dip or a honey sauce, fruits and veggies can curb any craving you have.
