Apples Have Been Shown to Help With IBS

Millions of Americans suffer from digestive problems, and it is important to see a doctor to determine whether or not it is Irritable Bowel Syndrome or something much more serious. IBS is formally defined as a physical disorder that affects the bowels. It is distinguished by abdominal pain, cramping, constipation, diarrhea, bloating and sometimes nausea. Irritable bowel syndrome is not a disease, but rather, a syndrome or disorder of the body (this just means that your bowels do not function properly).

You’ve Been Diagnosed, Now What?

Doctors are still not sure what causes IBS in patients. All that has been concluded is that the muscles and nerves may be more sensitive in IBS sufferers, and that muscle contractions may be overactive while eating. IBS does not lead to further health issues, and it doesn’t damage any part of your body. It is merely the cause of sometimes severe discomfort and pain. Since there is no known cause, doctors and scientists haven’t found any ONE treatment that works for all people, and in fact treatments are often a shot in the dark. So, no known cause and no real treatment where does that leave you?!

IBS: Treatment Options

Relieve Your Stress! Sometimes irritable bowel syndrome can occur when one is under too much stress. The immune system is weakened and suppressed when overwhelmed with excess stresses. Less stress may lead to less pain and cramping. Less stress may also allow you to manage the symptoms you do have with much more ease. Try meditation, (yoga can be great), hypnosis and other exercises. You may have to try several different activities until you find one that works really great for you.

Taking Medications. There are certain prescription drugs on the market that can cause some serious side effects so make sure you use pharmaceutical drugs as a last resort. Sometimes, laxatives can be helpful as well. These can be found at your local grocers.

Change Your Diet! Some drink and food can cause your symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome to worsen. These foods include any that are fatty or deep fried, chocolate, alcohol and caffeinated beverages. Some foods affect people in different ways, so be sure to keep track of what makes you feel worse and avoid those items. There ARE good foods that alleviate symptoms, and they are really tasty as well!

Apples and peaches are viewed as the most predominantly helpful foods when it comes to managing IBS. Apples are beneficial cooked and uncooked; uncooked apples are a natural treatment for constipation while baked apples work wonders to alleviate diarrhea. Apples act as natural laxatives because often sugars in the apple cannot be completely digested in the body. When the body can’t break down a substance, it will push out, leading to healthier bowel movements.
