Of course there are pills, sprays, creams and surgeries that may help, but no method is proven to help everyone, and many are temporary cures. By knowing all your options, you can best decide which treatment is for you.
What is Hair Loss?
Hair loss is as old as man kind. The history of it goes way back. Hair loss, or alopecia, is a condition affecting millions of men, women and children. Alopecia is the loss of hair where there formerly was hair, while hypotrichosis is a condition where no hair grows. Androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss and can occur in men and women.
Causes of Hair Loss
There are many causes of hair loss including genetics, disease, stress, medication, injury, aging and hair care. The most common is the genetic condition androgenetic alopecia , or male-pattern baldness. Women can have this too, called female pattern baldness. Other causes of hair loss include:
- Ringworm of the scalp common in children
- Stress
- Hair Care – from hair dye or excessive heat
- Age
- Nutrition – Poor nutrition can weaken the hair
- Medication – certain drugs or treatments
- Trichotillomania – a compulsion where people pull out the hair
- Hormones – birth control hormones and menstrual cycle
- Major surgery
Treatment Options
Treatment options vary in their severity. Many have side effects that may affect your health, and these should be taken into account. Work with your doctor to choose the best treatment for your specific condition. natural treatment options have been shown to help greatly and have no side effects.
Care For Thinning Hair
To maximize the hair you have, consider these tips to care for your hair. Semi-permanent hair color won’t damage your hair like permanent color will, and will provide volume and shine. Volumizing products along with regular shampooing and a volumizing conditioner can go a long way in plumping up hair. Style your hair in a flattering way; use a hair dryer but avoid hot irons and curlers.

Right now, I’m thinning at the back of my hair. It isn’t awful yet (how often do you normally look at the back of someone’s head and scrutinize?) and I just use shampoo and conditioner that thicken my hair and it looks better.
Eventually, and probably before it happens, I ought to take a more active role in keeping it before it all falls out (or at least makes me shave it down to nothing).
