Sexual Health & Aging In Men

Growing Older

Aging is a natural process that people go through, whether they want to or not. There are many changes that the body begins to show, including gray hair and wrinkles in the skin. Many people welcome it with open arms, while others are puzzled about it and become frustrated. The changing does not just stop at physical appearance; health is another big change your body may take.

It is important in the younger years of life to continually take care of your body for the time being and for the future. Someone who treats their body like trash while they are younger will notice the negative effects of their actions when they get older. That person will not be as healthy and will show the sure signs of aging.

There are many other changes that occur in both men and women as they age are associated with sexual health. Lowered libido and decreased arousal are both common sexual health problems that men and women encounter.

Testosterone is the Leader

At the age of about 40 years or so, the male body starts producing a decreasing amount of testosterone. Testosterone is a male hormone that preserves strength, muscle and bone mass, sperm production, fat distribution, potency and sex drive. It is a very important part of a male’s life because of its many functions.

As men age, their testosterone levels will start to decrease naturally. This usually does not result in a problem because even with a lowered amount, it is still within the normal range where it does not cause a problem for some men. But statistics show that about two in ten men who are over the age of 60 have significantly low testosterone levels.

Lowered Testosterone Levels

For those men, their testosterone deficiency is a medical condition called, male hypogonadism. Male hypogonadism is medically described as when a male’s testicles do not make enough of the sex hormone, testosterone. This can cause men to have lowered amounts of energy and less sexual interest.

There are forms of testosterone therapy in which aging men take hormones to help boost their testosterone levels. It can have a positive effect for some men, while not as productive for others.

Another Common Problem: Impotence

Impotence is another common sexual problem among men. It is the inability to get and/or keep an erection for sexual intercourse. It can happen naturally in men who have high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes due to their illness or the medications that they are on for their illness. There are a reported 15-25% of men who are age 65 and over that have a problem with impotence one out of every four times.

Factors of Sexual Health Problems

There are many factors that can contribute to sexual health problems in aging men. Many times the problems are natural and there are not explained reasons. While for others the problems can be a cause of an illness they may have, a disability or a medicine they may be taking for the disability or illness.

Sexual health problems can be very frustrating, if a doctor is consulted, he or she may be able to give some suggestions on how to remedy them. These problems can take a toll on a relationship, understanding them and their causes. By communicating about them, people should not let them get in the way or slow down a healthy sex life.
