When compared to the complicated surgeries, cumbersome devices and prescription medications used to treat erectile dysfunction, herbal remedies seem like the best solution possible.
To decide whether or not an herbal supplement can help you, you first have to know what ED is.
Erectile dysfunction or impotence means the inability to achieve or maintain an erection. During sexual arousal or stimulation, a signal from the brain causes the blood vessels in the spongy tissue on either side of the penis to dilate and fill with blood. As the tissue fills, the penis becomes erect.
Sexual intercourse can only occur if the penis is erect. If arousal, blood flow, or performance is frequently interrupted, the man is considered impotent. In some cases, even when desire is present, and even when an erection can be attained, it may not be full enough to have intercourse, or may frequently fade during intercourse. This can be extremely frustrating for both partners.
Causes vary. They can include psychological trauma, emotional stress, diabetes, smoking, hormonal imbalances, Alzheimer’s, MS, Parkinson’s, surgery or radiation damage in the pelvic area, injury to the pelvic area, prescription drugs, poor diet, obesity, vascular diseases, or depression.
The call for herbal remedies most likely stems from the severity of non-herbal remedies. Prescription drugs often have side effects, and drugs for ED are no different. Surgery involves installing two implants on either side of the penis, forcing an erection. This is quite an invasive procedure that most patients wish to avoid. Pumps, a device that uses suction to force blood into the penis can often be embarrassing, time-consuming, and tends to extinguish the spontaneity and passion from a romantic encounter. Most people would prefer taking a safe, all-natural supplement to any of these uncomfortable, aforementioned options.
When it comes to choosing an herbal supplement that’s right for you, it’s important to check out the ingredients and see if they”ve actually been proven to work as treatments for ED.
Here’s a list of ingredients that work, and how:
- Barrenwort: Has been known to work as an aphrodisiac, frequently used in traditional Chinese medicine for erectile dysfunction.
- Maca: Heightens libido, improved semen quality
- Velvet Bean: contains high levels of dopamine, which enhance sexual function. Velvet bean also works as an aphrodisiac.
- Tongkat Ali: allegedly enhances testosterone.
- Panax Ginseng: facilitates penile erection, improves libido.
- L-Arginine: Frequently used as a treatment for ED, also helps create Nitrous Oxide, involved in immune function, wound healing, cellular division.
- L-lysine: builds muscle protein.
This is only a sampling of the natural substances that have been proven to aid in ED. Several other can be found with appropriate research. Locating a supplement with several of these or other proven ingredients would indicate a positive result when it comes to erectile dysfunction.

In dealing with erectile dysfunction there are multiple factors of physiological, psychological, social, and anatomical origins. Erectile dysfunction can be caused by physical forces of the erection process, diseases of other organs, by depression, by side effects of prescription drugs. In such cases, restoration of impotency needs to address the underlying cause. Men must have their general health improved also to achieve sexual wellness, whereas traditional treatments ignores the underlying cause of impotence and over use may lead to the inability to have any hope of sexual energy restored.
I agree Casey. However, for some men, it may be just as simple as increasing blood flow due to an unnatural circulation problem. It took years for my father to open up (not that I’d want to here about any of it anyway) and discuss his sexual health–after I brought in his mail and found a Cialis prescription bottle and I gave him much grief.
He says he has a good heart and cholesterol, but with his bad knees (he played catcher in the minor leagues for a few years–go Detroit!) and can’t go for brisk walks like he could in his 50’s.
Natural organics, like epimedium (which, strangely, isn’t listed above), aka Horny Goat Weed, can “inject” a little vigor.
BTW–and I know this isn’t the place for it necessarily, but why is it called horny goat weed? Seriously? Every 6 year old who has bought candy at the store has seen the rack of pills boldly stating HORNY GOAT WEED. I think they should feed epimedium to whales and call it Horny Whale Plankton. Men want to have hard, un-natural erections, not some normal winky-dink one. Hung like a goat? No way. Hung like a whale? Now you’re talking. Okay. Done with my soap boxing.
Thank you for that quite informative and entertaining comment, Marco!
