Treatment of Fungal Infection in Diabetics

Diabetics are especially prone to fungal infections if their disease is not properly controlled. Fungal infections can be annoying or unsightly. They may cause slight to extreme discomfort, and rare infections can even lead to death. Knowing your treatment options, should you encounter a fungal infection, can help you to alleviate symptoms quickly and safely.

Treating Fungal Infections

For any rash or infection, it’s important to make your physician, the first step in your treatment plan. He, or she, will be able to assist you in properly diagnosing the condition and suggesting a course of treatment.

If your skin or body has been invaded by a fungal infection such as jock itch, athlete’s foot, or a yeast infection, you may want to try a natural product.

Nails that are infected by a fungus, are usually treated with either an oral anti-fungal or a topical nail laquer. As nails grow very slowly, it may take some time to receive visible results – three months for the oral medication and six months for the topical.

Ringworm on the scalp may be treated at home with the use of a shampoo containing either 2.5% selenium sulfide, or 1-2% zinc pyrithione, two or three times a week

Body Ringworm may respond to OTC topical. Additionally, if the ringworm sites are infected or deep, surgical draining may be required.

Pityriasis Versicolor may be treated with medications or the use of natural alternatives.

Mucormycosis requires urgent medical treatment since it can be a fatal infection. Any dead or infected tissue must be removed through surgery. Depending on the area affected, the surgery may be disfiguring. In addition to surgery, the patient is given anti-fungal medication either intravenously or by injection into the spinal fluid.

Prevention is the Key to Fungal Infection

It’s important to understand that controlling diabetes will greatly reduce your risk of developing a fungal infection. Without high glucose levels to thrive on, fungi will not as easily experience such an overgrowth to cause infection.
