Many people are interested in helping with their heartburn without using medication. Here are some tips and little known ways to help you in the future.

Heartburn

We’re all in the habit of chewing a few antacids when the heartburn hits. But if you find you’re turning to antacids too frequently, you’ll need to address the root cause of your heartburn. In the meantime, try these tricks:

  • Baking soda and water: stir a teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of water. Drink this to neutralize acidity in your stomach.
  • Clear soda: try drinking a glass of clear soda (caffeine free). The carbonation will ease your stomach, relieve acid build up and help with gas.
  • Digestive enzymes and pro-biotics: some people recommend using a combination of pro-biotics (from yogurt) and digestive enzymes in supplement form to get your digestive system back on track.

Other Common Techniques Include:

  • Regular exercise
  • Weight loss
  • Stopping smoking
  • Don’t drink alcohol
  • Reduce stress
  • Know what foods trigger heartburn
  • Elevate your head or bed
  • Eat 2-3 hours before bed
  • Don’t over eat

The easiest way to help with heartburn is to stop it from happening in the first place. Heartburn is such an uncomfortable feeling, and it can have serious health consequences. There’s no reason to make your self suffer needlessly. Learn what foods frequently trigger heartburn by tracking your diet for a week or two and noting the prevalence of heartburn. Chances are, you already know what foods cause your heartburn. All you need to do is figure out if it’s possible to eat those foods differently.

Lifestyle Changes

It may simply take a few lifestyle changes to help your heartburn. If you’re inclined to over eat or eat late at night, work to change these habits. Work on portion sizes and on scheduling regular meals as much as possible. If you have to eat before bed, have a small meal that you know for sure won’t give you heartburn. Use extra pillows under your head or try elevating the head of your bed onto small blocks.

If you find yourself at a restaurant, skip the greasy ribs and opts for a lean steak instead. If you love burgers, skip the ketchup, pickles and mustard witch are loaded with vinegar and try some cheese or fresh veggies.

Don’t accept heartburn as part of your life. Taking steps now to reduce the frequency will help improve your quality of life.  Many people have turned to herbal supplements for their heartburn and found relief.
