Is GERD Curable

Many people who are afflicted with heartburn choose to ignore their symptoms; while clearly under the impression that over the counter antacids will make it go away, the true cause of their acid reflux is left unchecked and untreated. This can lead to a serious health complication called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD.

The Symptoms of GERD

There are several classic symptoms of GERD, and it is important that you communicate with your health practitioner if you notice any of the following:

  • Heartburn symptoms more than two or three times a week
  • A burning feeling under your breastbone when symptomatic
  • Symptoms get worse after eating
  • Burning chest pain when exercising
  • Worsening of symptoms when you lie down
  • A faint acidic taste in your mouth
  • Difficulty sleeping at night
  • Asthma that is aggravated by heartburn
  • Scratchy voice when you have heartburn

Treating GERD

GERD is not curable. However, there are a multitude of treatment plans that can manage your GERD and allow you to eat and sleep without pain.

There are several lifestyle changes you can make that may have a positive impact on your GERD, but this stage of heartburn is usually too advanced for lifestyle changes alone. However, losing weight and eating a healthy diet will go far toward improving overall health. You should discuss a diet and exercise plan with your health practitioner.

A last option for GERD patients is surgery if the esophagus is severely damaged. This surgery reportedly repairs the valve between the stomach and esophagus, preventing acid reflux and allowing the esophagus to heal. Any type of surgery is dangerous and every other step should be taken to prevent this from happening.

Do not Ignore your GERD

Hopefully you have learned how far this gets you by now! Ignoring the symptoms of GERD and leaving it untreated allows it to erode the lining of the esophagus. The esophagus then creates a new lining that resembles the lining of the intestines.

Though GERD is not curable, it is certainly manageable; if it is not managed, then it can still be harmful. If you display the symptoms of GERD, get yourself checked out immediately, and get on a plan to improve your health.

Relieve episodic heartburn safely and naturally.
